Can you erase your past?

Are you a product of your past? Does your past define who you are today and who you will be tomorrow?

Some of the many questions I am asked in workshops and in 1:1 sessions. The answer in short is NO. You are not a product of your past history, you are a product of the current reality and perception you are choosing in this moment. Does the tragedy or the broken heart in your past define how you are to love and live now? NO. The outlook you choose to view today with what defines how you love and live now.

We are starting to open our eyes to the idea we are creators of our own reality and therefore not enslaved by the events of our past and the belief systems that have developed around what others have told us. This idea is liberating and exciting whilst also being incredibly daunting at the same time. Let’s face it, some of the broken-hearted emotions are comforting to cling to some times. Don’t they validate why you can’t move forward and pursue your dreams? Don’t they provide you with a valid excuse as to why you are in the situation you are in?

What about your labels that are derived from the past?

“I am a people pleaser”.

“I am a yes person”

“I am the one who______” and the list goes on.

All of these labels, definitions and identities that YOU have of adopted of yourself is what defines YOUR current reality. Perception and definition is everything. I will save you the clichés of positive thinking to look at the glass half full and serve it up with basic brain anatomy. As I say here in the video, the human brain is a series of neurological patters that become a belief system based on the activation frequency. Once you validate your belief system with further so called “evidence” (that you have gathered yourself) than soon it becomes a way you define yourself.

This makes NO sense to the Greater Mind who knows you have the ability to re-define your reality, identity and perceptions through FREE-WILL in any given moment. You know those things you call a “Light-Bulb” moment? This is when information aligns itself with a conundrum and clarity strikes you. Well in that instant you access a gateway to bring in a NEW reality to a situation that has perplexed you.  This doesn’t require an epiphany to perceive your reality differently. You can choose to change your perception in ANY moment.

From the moment you change your perception about your CURRENT reality then the past that is associated to that reality starts to reform itself to align to the new reality – definition – identity you have created. The example I give in the video is the common transformation I see when someone once saw themselves as a victim of a situation to now being a survivor of a situation. For those who saw Lee Squires talk on sobriety from an addiction to alcohol at Ignite 2013 witnessed this transformation first hand. She explained the numerous ways that she once defined herself and her situation that aided her use of alcohol. Now in her sobriety, alcohol is one of the many things that no longer exists in her life, including the recycled definition of herself she once held true.

By you holding that NEW point of perception in your mind then the way you begin to reflect on your past will automatically shift itself to aligning itself with your new definition. So the answer to the question in the title of this blog; Can I erase the past? The answer is no, but what’s better than erasing your past is having the power to change your perception of the past. Perception is what defines your current reality. This is a wonderful time to employ your Divine Rebel to defy the old reality and set yourself on a path to creating a new one. THE most important thing to you and your Greater Mind is your CURRENT reality.

How do you make a new reality stick? The mind is a tricky computer system that has a lot of data files stored and some pretty hard wired triggers for some. For those who are looking to overhaul your self-identity then total immersion of new stimulus is a magnificent way to force the brain to record new data. When you do this, the brain has no choice but to create new pathways based on those new experiences. You must create NEW data files, preferably only the ones which bring you joy, relief and a sense of pure self-expression. Hence the simple techniques of affirmations and visualization are a powerful tool for some. Registering for courses or workshops that expose you to new language, information, perspectives and conversations with like-minded people direct the brain to re-enforce new patterns. Social media can be a hindrance or a wonderful tool based on what you pay attention to. You can fill your news-feed with the pages, the videos and the conversations that remind you of your new reality and delete what doesn’t. However nothing is more powerful than your self- talk. The language you choose to speak to yourself with on a daily basis is what can concrete both a positive and negative image or definition of yourself.

The brain is impartial. It simply plays out the most dominant thoughts (neurological patterns)you continue to focus on. However the Greater Mind is not. It wants you to live a free life expanded by experiences and self-discoveries. Your Divine Rebel is the one who will fight for you to make the transition by protecting your freewill to do and be whatever the fck you want. This is your body, your mind, your life and it’s YOUR RULES. Literally.
