There are so many ways to define a good trainer. To save argument and misinterpretation, I have dedicated this blog to those who are a looking to step beyond the traditional motives of why you would hire a personal trainer and are ready to employ a source of education and self empowerment. My video “Welcome Rebelologists” I make it clear we are experiencing a cultural shift in our psychology towards our health and fitness. There is a rebellion being lead predominately by women who have begun to defy the confines of traditional weight-loss and commercial fitness to re-write the definition of health. They are throwing away scales and picking up self development books. They are enrolling in courses and seeking knowledge about their body, mind and spirit to claim ownership of what is rightfully theirs. This is quickly eradicating the dynamic of the “suck it up princess” training method where trainers dictate the entire protocol and you have to pay for the privilege.
In the above video I answer the question “How to choose the right Personal Trainer” if you have reached the stage where you no longer want to follow someone else’s rules and want to step into your own power and claim ‘Your Body, Your Rules”.
Its a common mistake to assume the relationship between a client and a trainer is to simply follow their instruction = get a result. This is a limited, one dimensional approach that can easily loose momentum, especially if you are not getting the results the program or trainer promised. For those who don’t want to just “follow the leader” and want to start taking ownership of their own wellness through self education, you are ready for what I call a “Libertarian” style trainer. I tour the country teaching fitness professionals the framework this style of training and how to support a client physically and emotionally throughout this unique process. This is a trainer who educates and supports you to become a self empowered client who is on a path of self-discovery as opposed to dependence. They help you achieve long term results, sustainable lifestyle change and a shift in your belief systems by allowing YOU to define what works for you and your red print.
This style of trainer is a cheerleader who uses their knowledge and experience to guide you along the path of how to make independent, well educated choices for yourself. They use questioning as opposed to ordering. They invite you to engage in the training sessions not just follow it and they are in great demand as we shift into this new paradigm of psychology. The goal of a Libertarian trainer isn’t rapid weight loss. Their purpose is to ensure you have the confidence and knowledge to feel empowered to take your own wellness into your own hands and learn to speak fluent “body language” using intuition and education.
There are many trainers who stand by the methods of “Just do it” and believe the reason you employ a trainer is to be told what to do. This is not a Libertarian style trainer and serves a different purpose. For the purpose of this vlog I explain the quick few things to look out for when looking for a trainer who will cheer-lead your journey to self empowerment not derail it.
Lets assume you have already qualified your choice with the appropriate certification, insurance, professional ethics and the standard duty of care and you are ready to start to look into character traits of their training style. Here is a few things to look out for.
